You Are Never Here

The Fader Magazine, February, 27 2007

So Santa Internet emailed us today with the good news that there’s a cool lil' art show entitled “You Are Here” which happens to be “opening” March 1st—courtesy of our buddies at the Graphic Havoc’s GHava Center for the Arts. It features work from art bros Andre Razo, J Penry, Cheryl Dunn, Patrick O'Dell (whose apropos photo is above) and Rostarr. We were totally stoked to check out the show and then realized that the whole burrito is taking place, uhm, virtually, on something called Second Life. The email describes this thing as a “metaverse,” which is either a really long poem—like Beowulf—or maybe the Universe for Overachievers, and either way it scares us. All of a sudden we were being asked to opt-in for weird dog-human avatars and choosing our username from a pull down menu (say hello to the Yoshikawas!). Then we had to download applications and pat our stomach and chew gum at the same time and we still couldn’t log onto the metaverse. Internet: Let us in! Maybe one day we will Understand the Net, but until then, the onus is on you, humanoid keystrokers of the universe. Go forth and prosper.

New York City artists hold opening

by Minerva Jackalope

Second Life News Network, March 02, 2007

SLNN1HAENIM - GHava{SL} Center for the Arts is a virtual exhibition space showing the works of a select group of NYC artists and held its opening yesterday.

The "you are here" exhibition, which takes place 1,805 ft high in the sky, in one of GHava{SL}'s several 16,533 sq ft glass galleries, is curated by artists Annie Ok (Xantherus Halberd in SL) and Derek Lerner (Rhizome Szydlowska in SL).

The purpose of the minimalistic design of the center emphasizes the pieces in the gallery. Halberd notes, "It's always all about presenting the work. The work speaks for itself. The surroundings should be as blank as possible to provide the best possible backdrop for the pieces themselves. We refrained from doing anything that would detract."

The title of the exhibition, "you are here," represents "being present in any given circumstance," Halberd said. "Being present to witness or create, emote, whatever. [But] I think the meaning of 'you are here' is also best left to the viewer to interpret in their own personal way."

The purpose of the exhibition, Halberd says, is "to share art with people who may not be able to come to the museums and galleries in NYC to see it for themselves. I feel very privileged to have so many talented friends as artists. I love their work and I only want to share it with others," she added.

Many of the artists who are included in the exhibition have never displayed their work in SL before but have been shown at prestigious institutions such as: Whitney Museum of American Art, Centre Georges Pompidou, Alleged Galleries, Deitch Projects, Andrea Rosen Gallery, Creative Time's The Brooklyn Anchorage, Bronwyn Keenan, American Fine Arts, Thread Waxing Space, Greenberg Van Doren Gallery and many others worldwide.

The gallery includes a variety of work including still life, photography, paintings, and drawings.

Patrick O'Dell, one of the artists, included in the gallery is the photo editor for Vice Magazine. His photography displays intimate moments of some well-known pro skaters. O'Dell also runs the website, epiclylaterd.com.

Another one of the artists included is Cheryl Dunn, a New York-based photographer, filmmaker and sociologist, who has shot for magazines such as Spin, Vogue, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, and Dazed and Confused. More recently, Dunn's work has been included in the "beautiful losers" exhibition, which toured around the world - she was one of only a females to do so. Dunn's work in the GHava{SL} exhibition includes a fearless self-portrait taken right after 9/11.

The exhibition also includes pieces from Martina Hoogland Ivanow, who has previously worked on campaigns for Prada and Miu Miu as well as numerous newspapers and magazines. Her work is characterized by skillful design, which occasionally moves towards abstraction, and warm, saturated colours, often with dim lighting. Her images steer clear of many of the objectifying, sexual stereotypes, but are often sensual.

The exhibition includes many more pieces by accomplished artists, some of which are available for purchase, and future exhibitions are in the works.

Nokia Flagship Store, NYC

by Josh Rubin from Cool Hunting

posted September 2006

NokiaNYC-01 NokiaNYC-02

Yesterday I had a sneak peek at Nokia's flagship store that will open here in NYC on Saturday (9 September 2006). The store, located just east of 5th Avenue on 57th Street, is the second Nokia store to open here in the US. Aiming to change the experience of learning about and purchasing wireless devices, Nokia's stores are highly experiential and are staffed by trained and articulate employees who are not tasked with selling devices so much as selling Nokia. Product support and servicing will also be facilitated in the store.

Phones sold in the store include a range beyond what's sold by the US carriers, in addition to the ones already supported. While the focus is not on selling wireless plans, T-Mobile and Sprint accounts are available.

Vertu-Constellation
The main floor (above, left), where customers will enter, has the full line of products and accessories on display including the 8801 front and center. The second floor features Nseries handsets and examples of the various devices they connect to for music amplification, picture printing, and digital media sharing. The top level (above, right) is dedicated to Vertu—the super luxury line of handsets and on opening day it will be the first place to see their new series of phones called Constellation (right).

Designed by Eight Inc, the first two floors are walled with luminous, color changing panels that wrap around flat panel displays and product pedestals. The displays feature a rotation of animations by various boutique graphic power houses including Hi-Res, Tomato, Universal Everything, The Hanazuki Company, Graphic Havoc GH avisualagency and Phunk Studio. One nice touch is that when you pick up a product a layer overlays the animation to show all the details on that item.
